NY’s ban on cellphones in schools is costing students over $4 million a year, namely though a cottage cell phone industry. Though 88 of the city’s 1200 schools have permanent metal detectors to catch weapons and phones, students are forced to either leave their cell at home or pay $1 a day for a truck or vendor to store it during class.
Students told New York Post they are cutting back on food and other purchases to use the money for cellphone storage, as parents feel Mayor Bloomberg’s ban is unsympathetic toward low-income families. The ban also saw renewed criticism last week after a storage truck was robbed at gunpoint of both its cash and the kids’ phones.
