Columbia University announced the creation of its online curricula across multiple departments this week, according to All Things D. The university-wide strategy is in response to the rapidly growing field of online education and digital media. The program will focus particularly on the School of Continuing Education and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and other departments who hope to create an online curriculum.

The primary goal of the new initiative is to ensure that Columbia creates new tools and technologies for interactive and distance learning in order to promote the most dynamic learning environment possible for students. The head of this department will be Sree Sreenivasan, who will act as Columbia University’s first Chief Digital Officer, and who previously acted as Dean of Student Affairs at Columbia’s School of Journalism. Sree will work with existing digital development groups on campus, such as Columbia’s Center for New Media Teaching and Learning. Sree has been a tech commentator for New York’s local TV news broadcasts, a blogger about social media for CNET, and does his own weekly Web-based call-in show on BlogTalkRadio.
