The first live webcast of a City Council hearing will be happening today. The initiative came from a push by Councilwoman Gale Brewer, who told Crains that the more people who participate in her hearing about the Board of Elections, the better the chances of reforming it. However, the board’s general counsel Steve Richman sees the webcast as a larger soapbox and he does not expect a fair hearing from council members who he says “have never relied on facts.”

Brewer expected to focus on the antiquated methods used by the board to convey election results. She recently met with hearing and visually impaired voters who complained about accessibility at poll sites. She said she will also address poll worker training, long wait times on Election Day and board governance issues.
