NY based social TV startup GetGlue has overhauled its check-in app and has become a full-blown, personalized guide for TV and over-the-top video, letting users find content they’re interested in based on their preferences and friends’ recommendations. The two-year-old company originally allowed users to check-in and say what shows they were currently watching. It now has over 3 million users contributing 500 million check-ins, likes, and TV/movie reviews.

The updated version, GetGlue HD, lists programs currently on-air that match a user’s profile, and lets fans see what their friends are watching in real-time. It is currently only available on the iPad, but versions of the free app will be released later in the fall for the iPhone and Android devices, and on GetGlue.com and a mobile website.

GetGlue will also monetize by selling sponsorships in the new app to TV networks and other content providers. The updated app still has the initial feature of letting users chat with friends and other fans while watching TV.
