Google recently held the final round of its popular annual programming competition in NY in an effort to build its recruitment efforts and presence in the city’s burgeoning startup scene. Google, which is known for an intense hiring process, has recently increased its local head count by 200 people , bringing its NY ranks to 2,900.

Employers and recruiters vying for top candidates must compete against not only the giants like Google and Facebook, but also the hundreds of startups in the city. However, events like these illustrate that there is much more of a social community in NY – rather than hack and go home, this is a place where programers hack together.
