NY launched its own Kickstarter page, Kickstarter.com/nyc. The page highlights small businesses and entrepreneurs in low-income neighborhoods underserved by banks and traditional financing. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn first proposed the idea in her State of the City speech earlier in the year.
In addition to reaching out to entrepreneurs in low-income areas to join the site, the city is looking for existing Kickstarter projects—like Brenda Beener’s campaign for the restaurant, Seasoned Vegan–in targeted neighborhoods that the city can feature on its page for more visibility. Beener couldn’t get a small bank loan, but raised $22,000 on Kickstarter.
