E-readers are not permissible on the Sabbath, according to Rabbi Daniel Nevins. Nevins, dean of the rabbinical school at the Jewish Theological Seminary, recently published a religious response on the use of electronic devices on Shabbat.

Nevins reasoned that e-readers like the Kindle download information from the Internet and track a user’s place, making it similar to melachah—or transforming material—which is prohibited on the Sabbath. The rabbi also said that if, in the future, the only way to read was on an electronic device, then ways to prevent it from creating permanent records or downloading new files should be explored.
