In a report called “Smarter Small Businesses” released recently, the Center for an Urban Future found that a technology gap is hurting small NY businesses, especially mom-and-pop stores and those owned by immigrants or minorities in boroughs other than Manhattan. As of now, fewer than 20% of these small businesses are effectively capitalizing on technology, such as store websites or computerized merchandise tracking.

Though some owners feel writing down the inventory and using a conventional cash register are effective, the report claims the biggest barrier to entry is a lack of understanding of technology and how it can help a business. The report recommends these companies begin by using technology tools like Google Ads, digital payroll programs and customer management software.
