As the new iPhone 5 goes on sale today, New York’s Finest will patrol NY Apple stores, preventing what they call “Apple picking.” The iPhone is thieves’ favorite device—with more than 4,100 reported stolen in August alone.
NYPD officers will be stationed in 21 locations around the city—including Apple stores, Verizon and AT&T outlets as part of “Operation ID.” Police will also engrave devices with a special serial number beginning with “NYC” so phones will be instantly recognized if lost or stolen. The NYPD is offering the service for free, even on devices other than the iPhone 5.
