Adapting to the ever-increasing pace of change is one of the New York Times’ biggest challenges, according to Jim Roberts, the paper’s assistant managing editor. Once they shifted over to the web, the paper had to adapt to smartphones and iPads. Social media also took them by surprise.
Roberts uses Twitter more than any other social medium, but doesn’t use it just as a pipeline for his own paper’s stories. He said it’s important to share news from a range of sources on his feed. Roberts reads and admires his competitors’ work and when he sees something he likes, he sends it around.
