NY app developers transform big data into usable information. FitMapped employs its own database of gyms and classes so NY users can find an establishment near them. Other developers make use of freely available transit data. HopStop was a 2005 pioneer in creating public transit directions. Embark, founded in 2011, is a similar service but doesn’t require an Internet connection or a cell signal. But developers need to pay attention to privacy concerns. Quip Media founder James Shrager said companies must be open and transparent about how they use customer data.
