Foursquare founder Dennis Crowley has always passed on acquisition offers. In the past he may have “looked back” but doesn’t now. At last night’s PandoMonthly NY Event, Crowley said Foursquare has evolved into the best local search tool—and it’s happened in the last six months. Instead of checking in, users browse the app for its curated content. Monetization prospects are looking up, too. They have developed tools to build a recommendation engine in the dashboard and promoted results will be a key area of revenue. Crowley says now Yelp is his main competitor.
