Various New Yorkers in the East Village have taken to charging their dying phones at nearby electrical outlets in light poles, according to the NY Post. Cellphone users open the doors on the side of light poles and some have even hard wired their own outlets.

Stephanie Brothers, an employee at a clothing store near one of the used light poles, said, “New Yorkers are so resourceful. I feel like New Yorkers wear blinders and ignore the weirdest things, so I’m sure no one really notices.”

One homeless man, who calls himself Vodou M. claims he used he light poles all the time before he was zapped with a jolt of electricity one day. The Department of Transportation noted the danger of trying to hard wire the posts and strongly advised against it.
