Chris Daggett says New Jersey residents draw the short straw when it comes to local news. Lodged between Philadelphia and New York, the Garden State has a hard time getting comprehensive local news coverage. Daggett is president and CEO of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, which recently won a 2012 Knight Community Information Challenge. The foundation is a lead funder of the New Jersey News Collaborative.
NJNC is a partnership with New Jersey Public Radio and the Center for Cooperative Media at Montclair State University, a number of television stations and some hyperlocal sites, including Baristanet and Jersey Bites. Daggett says the project’s success hinges on whether they can expand local news coverage and create a news ecosystem supported by the public.
