Recently, NY’s Department of Buildings announced an easier method for licensing permits to professionals for building work on homes and businesses. Architects and engineers can now apply online for permits for small renovations, according to The Wall Street Journal. Previously, the process required workers to submit paperwork in person and pay fees. A professional must be hired to use the new system.
It used to take from a few days to a few weeks to obtain necessary permits. Now, professionals can get permits within one business day by digitally submitting an application and construction plan. This new process is also expected to reduce costs for homeowners, according to building industry experts. This initiative is a part of an effort by NY to speed up construction approvals. According to Mayor Michael Bloomberg, this new program was launched ”to combine new technology with great customer service to expedite safe construction—and it has surpassed our expectations.”
Approximately 50,000 applications for small projects are submitted annually. It is estimated that the new, online approach will save the building industry up to $50 million a year in labor costs.
