The NY tech community found its political voice after successfully opposing SOPA and PIPA. Most entrepreneurs are too busy to be political players, but a few have emerged from the pack, each with a different focus. Angel investor Esther Dyson advocates for a bigger government investment in education. Kevin Ryan, CEO of Gilt Groupe and Deven Parekh of Insight Venture Partners recently co-hosted a fundraising event for President Obama. Andrew Rasiej, chairman of the New York Tech Meetup and founder of Personal Democracy Media, has conferences and news sites devoted to technology’s impact on politics and society. Rasiej believes that while the tech community needs to inform politicians about technology, the community should understand public policy issues.
