NY is home to a growing number of community-based tech businesses. Smallknot specializes in helping people invest in neighborhood businesses.  In exchange for funding, investors receive perks like a seat at the bar even on busy nights. Classtivity and Vimbly find education classes within a local area. The Hell’s Kitchen startup, MissNev, arranges for neighborhood businesses to accept packages for people at work. The startup was recently awarded the top prize and $6,000 at Etsy’s e-commerce hackathon because it generates in-store traffic and builds community ties.
