Yesterday, the Online Marketing Conference in NY set out to educate local businesses about online marketing. According to Street Fight Mag, some of the owners spoke of their issues with finding viable marketing options and also their experiences with Yelp. Laurie Nicholson, co-founder of Raising Astoria, talked about her store’s decision to advertise on Yelp and said, “It was my biggest mistake.” Representatives from Google, Yelp, Foursquare and other companies were at the conference, held at NY’s Rubin Museum.
Some people at the conference spoke very highly of Yelp, like Ismael Mosquera, owner of Gleam Salon in Morningside Heights. He said, “Nine of of ten of our new clients have been through Yelp. It’s been huge for us.” Yelp advertising gives some businesses the ability to break through the noise of many similar businesses. One definite conclusion from the event was that the needs of small businesses vary greatly from one another.
