Online retailers are targeting that “post pie” moment—after Thanksgiving dinner when people are flipping through their mobile devices. Steve Yankovich, head of eBay’s mobile business, told Reuters, “This is a new shoppable moment.” eBay is launching 20 mobile-only deals on Thanksgiving beginning 5:32 pm EST and 20 more for West Coast shoppers three hours later. Other retailers, including Toys“R”Us, Rue La La and ideeli are also targeting the new shopping sweet spot.
Thanksgiving Day shopping has grown 128 percent to $479 million during the past five years, far faster than the growth of Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, according to comScore Inc. A growing number of shoppers arrive onsite via iPad, says Jay Henderson, IBM’s global strategy director for enterprise marketing management. He told Reuters, “This is the first time the iPad has shown sustained leadership over all other mobile devices.”
