The new 18,200-seat Barclays Center has one of the most advanced audio/visual systems in the world. Each of the 700 Sony HDTVs and 100 concession stand digital message boards can be individually served by the stadium’s Cisco Stadium IPTV content distribution platform. Dave Potts, who oversaw the Barclays Center’s systems integration, told TV Technology that the system offers so much control that, “You can bring the addressability right down to wishing someone a ‘Happy Birthday’ within a specific executive box.” Customers get free WiFi, and if they download the arena’s soon-to-be released app, they can even order food at the concession stand and have it ready by the time they get there.
All of the A/V is controlled at the Video Production Center, which Chip Foley, director of building technology at Forest City Ratner, calls “The Captain’s Bridge.” Three Sony HD in-house cameras (one with a powerful 75x Canon zoom lens) are mixed into an MVS-7000X production switcher. Satellite and Time Warner Cable HD TV feeds are also available. The speakers include six arrays of 10 EAK KF740 enclosures and four EAW SB1001 subwoofers, all driven by 43 Lab.gruppen PLM 100000Q amplifiers –with a combined output of 210,000 watts.
