#Boxee TV: Not Ready for Prime Time?

Streaming Media reports that Boxee TV’s two key features–live television pause and cloud–or network-based DVR (nDVR)— are still in beta. Sold exclusively through Walmart, Boxee advertises these features prominently on their packaging as part of the “Boxee Rebellion.” But the nDVR feature is only available in eight cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C.

That adds up to a lot of returns by disgruntled customers, especially since Walmart’s core customer base is in rural areas, not the urban centers where the product functions.  The Brooklyn-based company hinted in a blog post that their product might not be ready for prime time: “Since this DVR is based in the cloud, as soon as it’s available in your city, you’ll be able to start using it right away, whether you buy your Boxee TV [now] or nine months from now,” the blog post states.
