Steven Romalewski, director of the Mapping Service at the Center for Urban Research at the CUNY Graduate Center, says open data sets and widespread use of the web led to greater information flexibility in maps. Speaking on WNYC’s New Tech City program, Romalewski said this allows information to be arranged in ways people never thought of before. Maps used to be just about a physical, external environment, but now the focus is more about customization and what surrounds the user. “It changes how people think of the world,” he said.
