Wal-Mart, Target and other stores are extending Black Friday by opening on Thanksgiving evening. That also strengthens the Buy Nothing Day movement, started by Adbusters in 1992. Now it’s an international protest observed by more than 65 countries. Recently renamed Occupy Christmas, it asks shoppers to abstain from buying stuff for a 24-hour period starting on Black Friday. The hope is by not participating in a shopping frenzy, people can benefit from a lower consumption lifestyle. Occupy Christmas asks people to enjoy time with family and friends.
