A time lapsed video created by Renesys shows that about 10 percent of the Internet networks in the NY metropolitan area went down as a result of Hurricane Sandy. The number is remarkably low, considering ConEd cut power to Lower Manhattan, where several networks are based, which indicates a lot of redundancy, planning and work to keep backup generators running.
But even so, Renesys likens the impact of the Internet going down to a country the size of Austria going dark.
