Sen. Charles Schumer is asking the Federal Communications Commission to require emergency power sources for cell phone towers. Because of the massive loss of service after Hurricane Sandy, Schumer wants a nationwide plan ensuring cell phone towers aren’t disrupted during emergencies. One-third of phone users rely just on wireless devices, he said, and many were left without service because cell phone towers failed during the storm. “In neighborhoods of Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Lower Manhattan, and Long Island, there was a virtual communications blackout, with residents struggling to find out vital information such as where disaster aid resources were located, and what had happened to their friends, family and neighbors,” he said.
