Engineer Bryan Irace spent the last three months rebuilding Tumblr’s iPhone app. The Verge reports the 3.2 version no longer relies on a webview—a feed pulled down from the web that turns into posts. Tumblr’s content has GIFs, chats, videos, photos and different kinds of HTML, all of which make large-scale webviews run into snags. Instead of making the browser do of the dirty work, the app itself downloads posts, pulling down content in any number of codecs and formats much faster. A bonus feature: a GIF manipulator, created by Tumblr engineer Devin Doty, that allows users to drag their finger along a GIF and scrub it at any speed.
