During Hurricane Sandy hundreds of thousands were left without power or means of transportation, and many received their storm updates via Twitter. Mayor Michael Bloomberg made it a point to stay on top of his Twitter updates, making posts like: “@MikeBloomberg: Monday October 29, 1:20 pm: Remain in your homes while the storm is in progress. Stay away from windows,” according to Forbes.

Columbia University and other schools throughout the city announced canceled classes and warned students to stay safe during the storm via Twitter. At a bar nearby Columbia’s campus someone was stabbed, updates on the crime were made on the @ColumbiaSpec twitter page.
