City University of New York will open new, state-of-the-art research labs at Lehman College early next year. The $70 million glass and steel Science Hall will be located in the Jerome Park section of the Bronx. The center is designed to make CUNY a contender for the technology, science, mathematics and engineering research funding that is expected flow as Cornell opens its Roosevelt Island campus. NYU and Columbia are also expected to boost their own STEM offerings. Liesel Jones, chairman of the biology department at Lehman, told Crain’s New York Business, “It is a competition on some level.” Currently about 10 percent of Lehman’s 10,000 undergraduates are science and tech majors.
