Quartz, the NY-based business news site launched by The Atlantic Media Company, is only two months old, but its traffic is steadily growing. According to Mashable, they had 840,000 unique visits in November, with about 40 percent coming from social networks, 11 percent from search and the rest via its email newsletter. Kevin Delaney, editor in chief, says that Twitter, Digg, Facebook, Google and LinkedIn are its top referrers. Originally, the site was not indexed in Google News, so they expect search to rise significantly.
Their editorial staff doesn’t concentrate on breaking news. Instead, they work on analysis pieces, “factoid” stories that are rooted in data and visual posts with charts and graphs. Delaney said their international traffic is roughly 40 percent and one third of all readers reach the site via a mobile device.
