NYC #TLC Vote Paves Way for Uber, Other Taxi-Hailing Apps

As the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission voted in a one-year test program allowing taxi-hailing apps Thursday, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick called the return of his company’s taxi service “imminent.” CNET reported that Uber curtailed its NY taxi app in October when the TLC said rules prohibit prearranged rides for yellow cabs.

Writing in a blog post, Kalanick struck a confident note, saying, “We already know how this pilot will turn out.” He noted that when the app was first released, there was “enormous, unprecedented demand from New Yorkers.”

According to CNET, the test program requires cabs in Manhattan’s central business district be within half a mile of e-hailing distance, and a mile and half in the rest of the city. Uber will likely see competition from other taxi apps, GetTaxi and Hailo.
