The New York Times’ multimedia feature “Snow Fall” integrated video, photos and graphics in a seamless way. Graphics director Steve Duenes and deputy director of digital design Andrew Kueneman told The Atlantic Wire that the story wasn’t produced in a normal CMS. Their graphics designers work together “in constant R&D mode.” The popularity of tablets also played a part wanting to create an immersive reader experience. “The integration of multimedia video and motion graphics in ways that made them feel like they were part of the body of the story, and not just side bars that you would experience after you were done reading the story hopefully comes through as you consume this on the tablet and even on the phone,” Duenes said.
