Team Rubicon, a volunteer organization of military veterans who help after disasters, set up base on Rockaway Beach Boulevard to help with relief efforts. Using a school bus as a command post, volunteers review damage, give assistance, and call for supplies. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Team Rubicon uses software from Palantir Technologies, founded by Peter Thiel. The software, which is usually used on battlefields, handles large data sets. The company has clients including the U.S. military, FBI, NYPD, and CIA. The software can upload geo-tagged photos, lets dispatchers see volunteers’ locations and make notes on maps of damaged houses.
The software is used to manage over 10,000 volunteers in the Rockaways. Team Rubicon will remain in the Rockaways until December 3, when they will hand over communications to long-term recovery operations.
