Jewish secondary schools need to create a radical new approach to science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, education. In The Jewish Week, Daniel Aviv, a science teacher at Soloman Schecter School of Westchester, writes that area Jewish schools are incorporating an innovative three-year STEM curriculum developed by Israel Sci-Tech Schools Network (ISTSN) with support from the Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education (CIJE). Instead of spoon-feeding students information, the new curriculum teaches basic scientific and technological concepts and then allows students to discover new things on their own. Aviv writes, “Secular courses that are academically rigorous, alongside more traditional Judaic studies, must be the formula not only for a robust Jewish school movement, but also for preparing our students for success in college and careers.”
