Private-equity firm Berkshire Partners LLC is buying and merging two fiber-optic network providers, NY-based Sidera Networks and Mass.-based Lightower Fiber Networks. According to The Wall Street Journal, the combined company will retain the Lightower name and be run by Rob Shanahan, Lightower’s chief executive. It will operate a 20,000-mile network connecting 6,000 locations.

“Even though we compete in similar markets, there was less network overlap than either of us thought,” Mr. Shanahan told The Journal, “We’ll have a lot more unique fiber assets to reach more customers.” As a result of the deal (which still needs regulatory approval) Lightower will forgo expansion plans to build fiber-optic routes in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and Virginia since Sidera covers these areas.
