The Brooklyn Public Library‘s Grand Army Plaza branch is unveiling a new showcase space, The Shelby White and Leon Levy Information Commons. According to The Wall Street Journal, it was designed with freelancers in mind. System upgrades include iMacs with lots of new software and new classrooms where arts groups can offer classes in digital photography, podcasting and video. The new computers will also offer access to subscription databases and digital research tools. Philanthropist and widow of billionaire Leon Levy, Shelby White grew up in Flatbush. She funded the $3.25 million renovation. “As a kid, I did all my schoolwork in this library,” White told the Journal. “It will be as important to the generation that’s coming here now as it was to me when I was in school.”
