When a Google Street View car was spotted on Staten Island recently, taking photos of Hurricane Sandy ravaged neighborhoods, residents got angry. The Google car, equipped with a panoramic roof camera, toured the hard hit New Dorp section of Staten Island. The New York Post reported that it also photographed damaged areas of the Rockaways. Several Staten Island residents complained the shots were unfair and could further depress real estate values. A Google spokesperson said that they wanted to make sure their images were up-to-date and show the extent of the damage. But at least one resident told the Post the neighborhood should be represented as it is—and to pretend that it’s any different is unrealistic.
