MTA Metro-North Railroad announced that Ericsson will design and install a wireless network inside the terminal as well as the Park Avenue Tunnel. Ericsson is working with a team that includes AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless to create a distributed antenna system (DAS.) The carriers will create two systems; public WiFi and a separate communications network for use by the railroad, MTA Police, NYPD, FDNY and emergency responders. The work is likely to take two years due to the complexity of installing separate systems in Grand Central, particularly in the track and tunnel areas, without disrupting the movement of 700 daily trains.
