The Metropolitan Transit Authority released an iPhone app for subway arrivals, and less than a day later an independent developer created the app, Subway Time for Android. The MTA decided to let private developers create Windows and Android apps, and designers Elad Katz and his wife obliged. Katz, who works for the digital ad agency R/GA and his wife, who works at Wireless Generation, read about the app on a long line for cabs at JFK airport. He told The Wall Street Journal, “By the time we were at the cab, we had decided that we’re going to do some reverse engineering and replicate the app on Android.” The app was available 16 hours after the MTA’s Friday morning news conference.
