The New York Theremin Society wants to deliver the instrument to the status they feel it deserves. Invented by Russian Leon Theremin, the electronic instrument has long been associated with soundtracks involving UFOs or otherworldly effects. It’s played by manipulating the electromagnetic fields around two antennae–one controlling pitch and the other volume. While it’s easy to create the sound of a laser beam, it’s much harder to play, say Enya, The Beatles or Jerome Kern. Dorit Chrysler, who recently performed a theremin concert at Joe’s Pub, told The Wall Street Journal, “It’s easy to play bad.”
