NY Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced a new plan to help police track thefts of controlled substances. OxyContin bottles will have GPS tracking devices. The “bait bottles” will be sold with regular containers at pharmacies. If stolen, they can lead police to stash locations around the city. This is part of Kelly’s “Operation Safety Cap,” which includes a database of nearly 6,000 licensed pharmacies in the greater NY area. Police are also visiting pharmacies and making recommendations regarding alarm system installations and maintaining brightly lit stores after closing to deter theft.
