Jeremy Heimans, founder of Purpose.com, calls himself a “movement entrepreneur.” According to the Economist, his NY-based business is a B Corporation, or a for-profit company with a social mission. Their social networking and online campaigns range from nuclear weapons ban to scrapping a Swedish law calling for sterilization after someone undergoes a sex change operation. They also offer free open source campaigning tools—including one that helps activists form flash mobs.
Their methods encourage users to do more than just click “Like.” In just 24 hours, Purpose helped the gay-rights campaign All Out to raise enough funds to airlift gay activists out of Iraq after they feared for their lives.
