NYC drivers may soon face even more reason to avoid speeding. There is growing support for the use of red-light cameras to penalize drivers who are speeding. Elected officials are saying that using the cameras is a matter of public safety and recently submitted a budget proposal to the state Assembly for a 20 camera pilot test program in school zones. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said that speeding is the number 1 cause of fatal crashes in the city and this will be a small deterrent in helping save lives. The fine for speeding would be $50.
