#NYCSubway Pay Phones on the Decline

According to an MTA survey, only 46% of the NYC Subway pay phones work, down 36 percent from 2011. Verizon, who used to operate the pay phones, sold it’s division to Pacific Telemanagement Services who is now removing the remaining payphones The number of pay phones has dropped from 3,600 to 2,000 and plans are in place to remove 1,300 more, leaving 700. Although the MTA is moving forward with plans to increase wireless and Wi-Fi service, plans were delayed due to Hurricane Sandy.
