Even as NYC increasingly becomes a mecca for film and television, often times the local studio bosses call shots for shows. Acclaimed HBO series Girls has had to move studios twice. Producer Illene Landress said that although it was costly for the show and inconvenient, it wasn’t up to them because the studio space they first filmed in was already rented to another show for the time of Girls‘ second season.
After a 2004 tax credit passed by Andrew Cuomo allowed a 30% tax credit for productions that shoot their work on local stages, producers have found it even more costly because of the high-demand of local stages.
