Butler was quick to point out that the majority of his site's posts are repurposed from elsewhere or consist mainly of photographs. Steele noted that many businesses are attracted to his company's sites for advertising because the cost is much less than The New York Times Magazine for example.

The Village Voice, which sublets office space to Curbed Media, publisher of blogs such as Eater and Racked, is also acting as a local ad network for the blog publisher. The Voice's sales team is selling local businesses ads for its Web site as well as the Curbed blogs and then sharing revenue. In return, it gets to offer Curbed's articles and readers, in addition to its own to lure advertisers.

This frees up Curbed's ad sales force to focus on national advertisers.
