ParkingAuction is working to save time, gas and frustrations caused by searching for parking around major cities, like NY and San Francisco, through an online marketplace of parking information. The NY-based app, which launched in beta on August 1st, connects drivers leaving a parking spot with those looking for one in real time. Those preparing to vacate their spots set a price for their spot, and invite searching drivers to bid on the spot. Currently ParkingAuction only works on a credit system, and sellers must forfeit the sale if another driver comes first.

According to GOOD, ParkingAuction is also beneficial for the environment. The app’s website reveals drivers burned 366,000 miles in NY and 950,000 miles in Los Angeles just searching for parking, the latter which is equivalent to 47,000 gallons of gas and 730 tons of carbon dioxide.
